Summer Activities

Kayak at Sunset Beach, CA

When you think of Westminster, you probably don’t think of kayaking, but you should. We’re only a short drive from some of the best beaches in Southern California. Driving straight toward the coast from Westminster will land you in Sunset Beach and Seal Beach. This area boasts more than a mile of continuous beach and plenty of outdoor recreation.

Rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard from OEX Sunset Beach. You’ll love paddling out into the bay and dipping your feet in the cool water. If you’re more interested in fishing, OEX has all the gear you need to get out on the water and catch a monster!

Westminster ICE

Is there anything more luxurious than ice skating in the middle of summer? It may be 90 degrees outside, but it’s a chilly 45 inside. Westminster ICE is an indoor ice skating rink that offers public skating times almost every day. Great for both beginners and experts, ice skating might become your new favorite summer activity. It’s fun, great exercise, and an even better way to beat the heat.

General admission costs $13, and skate rentals are $6. Make sure you check the calendar before you go; public skate times change based on the day or week and other activities going on at the facility. You can buy your admission tickets and skate rentals online, but you’re also free to walk in and skate, no reservation needed!

Main Street Car Show

Classic cars are about as American as apple pie, and summer is the time of year when classic car collectors are out and about showing off their gorgeous cars. Garden Grove, just minutes from Westminster, hosts the Main Street Car Show every Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. all summer long. It’s the longest-running car show in all of Orange County! What makes this car show unique is that every Friday sees a new batch of cars on display.

The car show is right along Main Street, meaning you’ll have access to great restaurants, drinks, and shopping while you visit the car show. Make an evening of it and get dinner and dessert alongside the car show!

Events

Huntington Beach Parade and Fireworks

Is there a better way to celebrate the birth of the country than attending the largest Fourth of July parade west of the Mississippi? Just a short drive from Westminster is Huntington Beach, CA, host to this impressive Fourth of July parade that often features local officials as well as famous actors, musicians, and other figures.

The parade begins at 10 a.m. and lasts around two hours. The parade can best be seen from spots along the Pacific Coast Highway, but Main Street and Lakeview Park are also good options. Later that day is the Pier Plaza Festival, with food, games, and live entertainment. That night, guests will enjoy a spectacular fireworks display of over 1,300 rounds of fireworks. You won’t want to miss this amazing celebration!

Mad Science: Robots 101

If you have a child who’s interested in science and technology, they’ll love attending the week-long Mad Science: Robots 101 course! Participants will learn all about robot circuitry and how sensors let them explore the world around them.

This is a great way to get kids interested in the wonderful world of technology! Toward the end of the course, the children will get the chance to use the skills they learned to build their very own working robots to take home! A $30 materials fee is due the first day of class.

Surf City Run

For those who enjoy a good run, this Fourth of July is the perfect time to run a 5K, and you’ll even get a free shirt to prove it! Before the start of the parade, residents and visitors have the chance to complete a 5K along the same path that the parade will follow. There are also options for a stroller 5K and a kids fun run (which will only be a mile).

Registration costs $30 for all events except the children’s fun run, which is $15. With all the tasty treats available on the Fourth of July, maybe a good run isn’t such a bad idea! Get together with your friends and family and burn off some calories this Fourth of July!
